India, Dr. Tonymon A.O.

As a Professional Social Worker, I did my Post Graduation in MSW specialised in medical and psychiatry from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, India. Soon after the PG Profession, I was selected by the Government to work as a Caretaker Cum Counsellor in one of the Children’s Home (Child in Conflict with Law) in Kerala. It was my career’s first experience. It gave me extraordinary experiences regarding crime and the children’s involvement in crime related activities and how to bring them back to Social Norms and how they can be useful as true citizens of the country.

I did my M.PHIL in social work from Bharathidasan University specialized in family and child welfare. In these two years of the programme, I had the ample opportunities of studying Gerontology of Social Work. It is because of my Guru and Head of the Department Dr. Ilango Ponnusawmy, a UGC Professor and a Pioneer in social work in India. His life’s major works were always centred on old age. I attended many seminars and conferences based on old age themes. The most interesting thing I would highlight is that the Bharathidasan University and Heritage Foundation of Hyderabad and Chennai (an Organization working only for Older Adults) made an MOU and the collaboration that these two institutes made was excellent. When they made the first National Workshop for the staff working in the field of older adults, I was the Organizing Coordinator for this programme. I have worked as the research coordinator for the IMRB international, an organization meant for social science research. I have done research in the field of HIV/AIDS.

I have done my PhD in Social Work from Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu, India. My Research was on children and it was an intervention study and a new model was developed for the welfare of children. I have published many research papers in the field of social work of international journals. I have participated in conferences, eminars and workshops more than 65 in numbers and I have presented more than 19 papers. After the award of PhD, I started to work as an Assistant Professor in the subject of social work for nearly five years.

I am currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work of ST. ALBERT’S COLLEGE AUTONOMOUS, ERNAKULAM, KERALA, INDIA. Here I mainly teach core papers like Counselling and Psychotherapy and specialization papers of Medical and Psychiatry & Family and Child Welfare, both of them include theory and practice.
