Professor Denise Eldemire-Shearer is an internationally respected leader in ageing, public health and geriatric medicine. A Professor of Public Health and Ageing at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus in Jamaica, she has dedicated her career to advancing the wellbeing of older persons through research, policy development and education. As Executive Director of the Mona Ageing and Wellness Centre, she has been instrumental in promoting healthy ageing initiatives that empower older persons and support age-friendly communities. Her work has influenced both regional and international conversations on ageing, making her one of the Caribbean’s most distinguished voices in the field.
Throughout her career, Professor Eldemire-Shearer has championed the rights and wellbeing of older persons, contributing significantly to the development of policies and programmes that promote active and healthy ageing. Her expertise spans public health, gerontology, long-term care and age-friendly environments, and she has worked extensively to strengthen interdisciplinary approaches to ageing across the Commonwealth and beyond. Her appointment to the CommonAge Board further strengthens the organisation’s commitment to evidence-based advocacy and collaborative leadership.
